Searching a U.S. Treasury check is as easy as searching any other check, with only a few differences that we will look at below. Properly searching a Treasury check will provide you with a status and Payee Verification from the Treasury's verification website to assist you with determining how to handle the presented Treasury check.
If you are integrated, there is nothing extra that you’ll need to configure for the Payee Verification to work. This is an active service, and you do not need to sign up for it. TrueChecks will work with the TCVS and your integration to provide you with this information as long as it’s available and your real-time integrator has completed the API V2 update. Here is a link to the API documentation.
To search for a Treasury Check in the TrueChecks portal you may need to first enable the Depositor Setting. This is a check box that will allow you to add the payee's name. Simply navigate to Administrator> TrueChecks and enable the Depositor Settings. Be sure to select save at the bottom of the page.
** You can select to only enable the search window. The other fields are not required for payee validation.
Next in the TrueChecks portal, you will need to add the Routing, Account Number, Check Number, Amount, and Payee Name.
Searching a Treasury check has gotten even easier. The check number required is only the first 4-5 digits shown in the above highlighted area. Once you enter the Treasury routing number, you will notice blue information marks that will give you helpful tips on how to search a Treasury check.
When the information is input properly, you will see an alert that looks like the one below. Here were can see that the information matches the TCVS and the payee name is presented.
Common Treasury FAQs –
1) If we see the Payee status on the frontline, can we see this information in Batch? Yes!
You will receive results wherever your checks are scanned for AFS results. This means you'll see it on the Frontline-Branch deposits; ITM deposits; Mobile deposits and for Check Information Manually entered into AFS for results.
2) How do you enable depositor search fields? This can be enabled for portal only clients.
To do this, you must be an administrator. Here is a helpful article that reviews the depositor search in detail.
3) What if there are two payee names on a Treasury Check? Will both names be validated?
Yes. You could receive validation on one or both names. The spelling and connective between the names is important. This should match the Treasury Check exactly. "AND" and the word "OR" is not commonly used between names on a Treasury Check whereas an ampersand is. This should be what is used in your search. For example, "Jane Doe & James Doe" would be correct whereas "Jane Doe and James Doe" would be incorrect.
4) What other types of treasury alerts might be presented?
- Here is an alert stating that the information does not match the TCVS records. Please note that this does not always mean that the item is fraudulent, only that there is no match at this time.
- Another alert you may see is The Check Symbol did not pass check digit verification. If you continue to see this error, please reach out to your integration partner or AFS support for assistance. This usually means that the MICR information for the check symbol is not being read properly when scanned.
- The alert below may be seen when a Treasury Check has already been presented and paid. In this event, you will receive a Deny recommendation.
